What is the morning-after pill?

The morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive that generally is effective for up to 3 to 5 days (depending on brand chosen) after unprotected sex or a contraceptive mishap. Even though each brand advises efficacy within a certain time frame, the sooner you take the pill the greater the chance that you will effectively prevent pregnancy. Ideally the pill should be taken within 12 hours to have the best chance of avoiding conception, so best to order one and just keep it in case of an emergency. (Make sure you note the expiry date)

When should you use the morning-after pill?

Only women over 18 who have had unprotected sex or if their regular contraception failed can use Levonelle and ellaOne. You must only use the morning after pill once per menstral cycle and you may only take one pill. For the rest of your cycle if you continue having sex you should use a condom and be extra careful, even if you are already taking a daily contraceptive pill. This is so that you reduce the risk of contraceptive failure to an absolute minimum.

How effective is this emergency contraception?

The sooner after unprotected sex you take the morning after pill the more effective the pill is. Levonelle One Step is known to prevent 95% of pregnancies when taken within 24hours of having unprotected sex. This drops to 85% effectiveness after 48 hours and then again it drops to 58% effectiveness if taken within 72 hours
On the other hand ellaOne is estimated to be 98% effective if taken within the recommended time frame, with only 2 in every 100 women who took ellaOne within five days of intercourse becoming pregnant.

How does the morning-after pill work?

The morning after pill contains levonorgestrel, this works to prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg as well as altering the lining of your womb so that no fertilized egg can embed itself there. Therefore the morning after pill prevents pregnancy. The morning after pill does not work if you are already pregnant.

When should you use the morning-after pill?

A morning-after pill is an emergency contraceptive which usually works for up to three days (72 hours) after you have unprotected sex. Though it is effective for up to three days after unprotected intercourse, the sooner you take the pill, the better chance you have of preventing pregnancy. Ideally, you should take the morning-after pill within 12 hours to stand the best chance of avoiding conception.
